La Quinta, Calif. — Rookie Davis Thompson hit three eagles on Friday from five to 36 total holes to tie the PGA Tour record for most 72-hole tournaments since 1983. Distance to Jon Rahm on American Express.
Thompson also carded his first bogey of the tournament, but this was not enough to slow him down. The day after he led the first round with consecutive eagles at 10-under 62 at Quinta, Thompson recorded an 8-under 64 at the Nicklaus Tournament course at the PGA West. He had his 3 eagles, 4 birdies and 2 bogeys.
The 23-year-old, who played college golf at the University of Georgia, went 18-under 126, two shots behind Rahm, who also hit 64 at the Nicklaus Course.
Thompson said, “I had some good numbers going into the par 5 and was able to execute my shot.”
In fact, his whole game is doing well in the Southern California desert.
“I think I put the ball on the fairway, hit a lot of greens and had a good line of putt,” Thompson said. “Everything has been ticking for him these past two days and I am looking forward to trying to continue tomorrow.”
Thompson will play on the stadium course on Saturday. The stadium course will host the final round on Sunday after a 54-hole cut for this Pro-Am event featuring three courses.
Thompson is only the second player to score five eagles in two rounds on American Express. He equaled the record set by Scott McCarron in 1995 when he missed the 72-hole cut in a five-round tournament.
Starting the round in a parka in the early morning chill, Thompson hit the 5-iron about 15 feet on the par-5 11th hole of the second hole. He then scored two bogeys on four holes across the turn to briefly lose the lead, but then ran three birdies and two eagles in a row over a five-hole span, going from 1-under to 8 in the round. I became an under. He eagled the par-5 4th and the par-5 7th, hitting the green with a mid-iron, vacating putts from about 20 feet each time, and hitting consecutive pars to finish the round.
Other players with five eagles in four rounds of tournaments since 1983 are Justin Rose at the 2022 Canadian Open, Dustin Johnson at the 2020 FedEx St. Jude Championship, Austin Cooke at the 2019 Barbasol Championship, 2018 Canadian Open, 1994 Davis Love III at the 2013 Sony Open. Only Johnson won.
World No. 4 Rahm, who won at Kapalua two weeks ago, matched his score at La Quinta the day before.
