Torrey Pines, Calif. — Jon Rahm is on the verge of winning his third PGA Tour event of the year, but he’s not shying away from what could be a historic win on the course — Torrey Pines — he’s had a lot of success.
“I know very few people can do this,” said Rahm. “I don’t take it for granted, because until one of them comes again, who knows.”
He’s won four of his last six appearances at Worlds in the past three months and is a frontrunner in San Diego this week.
If Rahm wins at Torrey Pines this week, he’s won twice, including the 2021 US Open, but it would be the 19th time since 1997 that a player has won three straight on the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods has played 14 of the last 18.
By all accounts, no one plays golf better than 28-year-old Rahm, but after winning the American Express Tournament last week and the Sentry Tournament of Champions two weeks earlier, he’s still No. 3 in the official World Golf Rankings. . .
A win or a top-three finish at the Farmers Insurance Open this week would change that.
Torrey Pines looks great with Rahm and his left-to-right ball flight. Rahm won his first PGA Tour event here in 2017 and, as he said on Tuesday, had the best driving week of his career. He hopes to repeat it again this week.
“I feel very comfortable with the ball now,” said Rahm. “My confidence in my swing is pretty high.”
As Justin Thomas pointed out on Tuesday, Rahm seems to have a good set-up at any course given the way he hits the ball.
“When you start driving like him and hitting irons like him, you’re only halfway through your putting week,” Thomas said. “It will be difficult to beat him.”
