RIO GRANDE, PUERTO RICO – Mexico’s Luis Carrera went bogey-free at the Grand Reserve on Friday to post his second consecutive 5-under 67 to take a one-shot lead heading into the Latin American Amateur Championship weekend.
Argentina’s Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira was one stroke behind with a 67 after missing the playoffs by one in last year’s tournament.
The winner will qualify for the Masters in April and the US Open in June, as well as other waivers.
Carrera, a senior in Central Florida, was inspired by Alvaro Ortiz, who won the Latin America Amateur in 2019, and wants nothing more than to give Mexico another title at this championship.
The cut was 147.
Defending champion Aaron Jarvis of the Cayman Islands had a 70, eight strokes behind. After two rounds, he only took the lead with eight men.
Peru’s Julian Perico scored a low round with 66, two shots ahead of Carrera.
Colombia’s Mateo Huenmayor was the 18-hole leader with a 6-under 66, trailing behind with a 77, nine strokes behind.
