If you’ve been following the golf news from storm-hit California, you may have seen footage of Monterey last week when waves swallowed the oceanfront par-3 14th hole of the Monterey Peninsula Dunes Course.
What you probably haven’t seen was another impressive video shared with GOLF.com.
On the same day that the sea hit the 14th hole, he hit the edge of another famous par 3, perhaps the most famous par 3 in the world, the majestic 16th at Cypress Point.
16th Street, jutting into the ocean just off 17-Mile Drive, needs no introduction. But I’ll give you one anyway.
Play from a tee set next to a cypress grove to a bluff-top green 235 yards above the water.
In clear skies last November, the 16th made headlines on social media when SMU golfer Christian Clark scored a goal in front of the cameras. (Surprisingly, later that same month, another The hole-in-one at 16:00 was captured on video. )
Cypress Point remained open last week when wind and rain whipped up the coast, and several groups were seen playing the course on a day when 16 hours looked more intimidating than usual. The 16th was never overwhelmed by the waves as the green is rock covered. Only a salt spray splashed the vegetables. But the swell of the sea around it made for an eye-catching spectacle.
